In recent political and constitutional history, scholars seldom specify how and why they use the concept of territory. In research on state formation processes and nation building, for instance, the term mostly designates an enclosed geographical area ruled by a central government. Inspired by ideas from political geographers, this book explores the layered and constantly changing meanings of territory in late medieval and early modern Europe before cartography and state formation turned boundaries and territories into more fixed (but still changeable) geographical entities. Its central thesis is that analysing the notion of territory in a premodern setting involves analysing territorial practices: practices that relate people and power to space(s). The book not only examines the construction and spatial structure of premodern territories but also explores their perception and representation through the use of a broad range of sources: from administrative texts to maps, from stained glass windows to chronicles.

Wim Delvoye (Wervik, België, 1965) toont ons hoe hij de tegenwoordige samenleving ziet: kritisch, met een knipoog. Zijn conceptuele kunstwerken laten grenzen vervagen: heden en verleden komen samen, hoogstaand vakmanschap ontmoet populaire alledaagse gebruiksobjecten.

Dit resulteert in heraldische strijkplanken, gasflessen beschilderd in Delftsblauw, ragfijne stalen betonmolens, de *Cloaca*-machine, getatoeëerde varkens, bewerkte motorbanden en verwrongen kruisbeelden; het zijn enkele van zijn verrassende en uiterst originele werken. Graaf Robrecht de Fries (r. 1071-1093) behoeft in Vlaanderen geen toelichting. Maar hoewel hij een cruciale rol heeft gespeeld in de geschiedenis van het graafschap Holland, weten nog maar weinig Nederlanders wie hij was. Hij dankte zijn bijnaam De0Fries (?De Hollander?, zouden we nu zeggen) aan zijn huwelijk met de weduwe van graaf Floris I van Holland. Robrecht nam zijn bruid mee naar Vlaanderen en plaatste haar zoon Dirk V in Holland op de troon. Dirk werd door de bisschop van Utrecht verdreven, maar Robrecht wreekte die daad, waarna Dirk zijn rechtmatige plaats weer kon innemen en diens nakomelingen nog meer dan twee eeuwen lang over het graafschap heersten. In deze toegankelijke biografie schetst Kees Nieuwenhuijsen een zo compleet mogelijk beeld van Robrecht en de tijd waarin hij leefde.
